Is a USDOT Number Free? What It Costs, and What You Actually Pay For

Yes. FMCSA doesn't charge a fee for a USDOT number. If a website asks you for hundreds of dollars "for your DOT number," you're paying a private company for its service, not a government fee. That can be fine, but you should know which is which.

Who needs a USDOT number

Under federal rules, you need one if you operate in interstate commerce with a vehicle that:

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or combination weight of 10,001 lbs or more
  • Is designed or used to carry 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is designed or used to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Carries hazardous materials in amounts that require placards

Many states also require a USDOT number for trucks that never leave the state. Not sure what applies to you? Our free compliance check tells you in a few questions.

Where the real costs are

FilingGovernment feeWho needs it
USDOT numberFreeInterstate carriers meeting the thresholds above, plus some intrastate
Operating authority (MC)$300 per authority type, non-refundableFor-hire carriers and brokers in interstate commerce
BOC-3 process agentNone (agent's fee)Every carrier and broker with operating authority
UCR registrationAnnual, set by fleet sizeMost interstate carriers, brokers and freight forwarders
Insurance filings (BMC-91/91X)None (your insurer files)For-hire carriers with operating authority
MCS-150 biennial updateFreeEvery USDOT number, every 24 months
A free USDOT number filed with the wrong operation type, cargo or interstate/intrastate answer causes problems later: the wrong requirements, delayed authority, or a number you have to fix or replace. Most of what a filing service sells is getting those answers right the first time.
